No Notes!
Tonight was the first night in 2.5 years of doing stand-up that I didn't
physically prepare in some way before my set. What I mean by that is
that normally I write notes about the jokes that I plan to do and up
until recent months I always had them on the stool next to me. Lately
however I've been doing better about keeping the notes in my pocket, not
needing to pull them out at all. But tonight I hosted and didn't write
any notes whatsoever, just planned about 2/3 of my set in my head and
winged the rest. I'm not saying this because it was a particularly
spectacular set or anything. And I'm definitely not trying to boast, if
anything it really means that I need to write some more new material.
I'm just saying this because it IS a milestone for me
(albeit a small one) and it MAY serve to inspire someone else in the
similar position of trying to reach a new level with both mastery of
your material and your comfort onstage.
